  16. <p>Zero-gravity protein is no reason to build a space station,
  17. say scientists

  19. <p>     One of the arguments for building the multibillion-dollar
  20. space station Freedom is that it would provide a zero-gravity
  21. laboratory to grow bigger and purer protein and silicon
  22. crystals. But increasingly there is a question as to whether the
  23. crystal-growing techniques, at least for proteins, are all that
  24. reliable. Reviewing a decade's worth of such space efforts,
  25. scientists writing in Nature found that less than a quarter of
  26. the experiments actually worked, and then with only mixed
  27. success. Their recommendation: rent time aboard the already
  28. orbiting Russian space station Mir.
